چکیده

We study optimal constant-rate coding schemes for a block-fading channel with strict transmission delay constraint, under the assumption that both the transmitter and the receiver have perfect channel-state information. We show that the information outage probability is minimized by concatenating a standard “Gaussian” code with an optimal power controller, which allocates the transmitted power dynamically to the transmitted symbols. We solve the minimum outage probability problem under different constraints on the transmitted power and we derive the corresponding power-allocation strategies. In addition, we propose an algorithm that approaches the optimal power allocation when the fading statistics are not known. Numerical examples for different fading channels are provided, and some applications discussed. In particular, we show that minimum outage probability and delay-limited capacity are closely related quantities, and we find a closed-form expression for the delay-limited capacity of the Rayleigh block-fading channel with transmission over two independent blocks. We also discuss repetition diversity and its relation with direct-sequence or multicarrier spreadspectrum transmission. The optimal power-allocation strategy in this case corresponds to selection diversity at the transmitter. From the single-user point of view considered in this paper, there exists an optimal repetition diversity order (or spreading factor) that minimizes the information outage probability for given rate, power, and fading statistics.

A Blind Hammerstein Diversity Combining Technique for Flat Fading Channels

Diversity combining techniques play an important role in combating the destructive effects of channel fading in wireless communication systems. In this work we present a blind diversity combining technique for Rayleigh flat fading channels based on Hammerstein type filters. We show that the performance of this technique is very close to ideal MRC system which is accepted as an optimum receiver ...

Near-optimum transmit power allocation for space– time block encoded wireless communication systems

Space–time block codes (STBCs) allow the diversity provided by multiple-input– multiple-output (MIMO) communication channels to be utilised, thereby increasing the capacity over ergodic fading channels or decreasing the outage probability over non-ergodic fading channels. The authors consider the deployment of orthogonal STBCs in spatially distributed mesh networks where the potentially differe...

Energy Detection of Unknown Signals over Composite multipath/shadowing Fading Channels

In this paper, the performance analysis of an energy detector is exploited over composite multipath/shadowing fading channels, which is modeled by Rayleigh-lognormal (RL) distribution. Based on an approximate channel model which was recently proposed by the author, the RL envelope probability density function (pdf) is approximated by a finite sum of weighted Rayleigh pdfs. Relying on this inter...

Optimum Power Allocation over Fading Channels in Cognitive Radio Mimo Networks

A cognitive radio (CR) is a transceiver which automatically detects the available unused channels in the wireless spectrum. A cognitive radio network (CRN) is formed by either allowing the secondary users (SUs) to coexist with the primary users (PUs) or enabling the SUs to use the unoccupied portion of the spectrum. In this paper, the ergodic capacity maximization problem is studied in Rayleigh...
